Masizame offers food, shower facilities, life-skills training, mentorship and guidance to street children. This is followed up by intervention services with the goal to help the children to reach their full potential and become responsible contributing members of their communities. The funds raised by StreetSmart Plettenberg Bay will go towards a new family reconstruction auxiliary social worker position.

Masizame Handover 2014 ''StreetSmart South Africa funding has allowed Masizame to expand the breadth of our services through hiring an Auxiliary Social Worker Intern and an Educational Psychologist whose roles are to facilitate the process of sending 12 children who have dropped out formal education back to school. As a beneficiary of StreetSmart, Masizame’s public profile is raised, aiding our ability to obtain further resources as we look to meet the needs of the children we serve,” said Masizame chairperson, Antoinette van der Mescht.

StreetSmart South Africa’s other beneficiaries for 2015 are Cape Town Multi Service Centre, Home from Home, Learn to Live, Ons Plek, T.L.C. Outreach Projects in Cape Town; Kusasa in Franschhoek, Home from Home in Stellenbosch, Kids Haven in Johannesburg and PEN in Pretoria. All these charities are actively involved with the social development and rehabilitation of street children.

Nguni, one of the founding StreetSmart restaurants in Plettenberg Bay, was the town’s leading contributing restaurant this year.

Nguni Jacqui

"We first came across the StreetSmart initiative while dining in Cape Town and thought it was a great concept which went directly to the cause. After we were contacted by Karen Spurrier of StreetSmart here in Plett, we signed up enthusiastically as it is a simple but effective way of trying to resolve an ongoing problem which affects both local businesses and tourists alike.” said Jacqui Carter-Johnson, co-owner of Nguni.

“The waiters find it easy to add R5 in aid of StreetSmart to the bill and guests are known to give more - the table cards are simple and direct and when necessary we show them the brochure and poster to answer any other questions they may have as well as suggesting other StreetSmart restaurants in the area; all in all a simple concept going to a great cause!"

“We are very proud of the restaurateurs who have committed themselves and their establishments to making the StreetSmart initiative work here by taking an active part in a solution to, and providing much needed funding for those who work with street children in the local community,” said Karen Spurrier, chairperson of StreetSmart Plettenberg Bay.

It was a dining experience of Stenströms CEO, Anders Bengtsson, at a Cape Town restaurant that would change the fate of the Mother City’s destitute street children significantly. Patrons were invited via a card placed on each table, to donate R5 to StreetSmart SA in suppport of their efforts to rescue vulnerable children from a life on the streets.

Stenströms and StreetSmart SA have found common ground in helping to keep Cape Town’s youngsters off the streets, so much so that Stenströms recently handed over a further R25 OOO donation to StreetSmart SA at the Radisson Blu in Granger Bay. These funds will help to maintain the momentum of this life-changing project.

Stenströms WP

Stenströms was established in 1899 and produces fine quality men’s shirts and ladies’ blouses made from 100% twofold super cotton. This iconic Swedish fashion house has just celebrated its 115th anniversary by creating an exclusive anniversary collection capturing the very essence of the brand. For 115 years, the brand has delivered garments boasting on trend design and superb quality.

Stenströms’ corporate social responsibility footprint stretches as far afield as Estonia, where they established the country’s first centre for disabled children and their families in 2007, also supporting a home for disabled children.

StreetSmart SA is a registered non-profit and a public benefit organisation that distributes raised funds to selected beneficiaries. The current beneficiaries in South Africa areorganisations that work with street children and those who are vulnerable and at risk of becoming street children. StreetSmart SA raises money via participating restaurants, and distributes it directly to organisations who have the experience and facilities to help vulnerable children. Participating restaurants display a StreetSmart SA card on their tables, informing patrons that a voluntary R5 donation will be added to their bill, which they may increase at their discretion.

’It gives us great pleasure to support StreetSmart SA. Children living on the streets

are amongst the most marginalized of all South Africa’s children, and they need our

support,’ said Anders Bengtsson, owner and President of Stenströms.

‘StreetSmart's goal is to be part of the process of social normalisation and to encourage the public not to put money in the hands of children, as this keeps them on the streets. In essence, eating and donating at a StreetSmart restaurant is the responsible way to help a street child,’ said Nils Heckscher, chairman of StreetSmart SA.
