Swellendam has become the latest town to join StreetSmart SA, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the social integration and upliftment of street children. This picturesque Overberg town, just off the N2, with its vibrant restaurants is committed to helping marginalised children at risk in the region.

"The joy. The usefulness. The sense of accomplishment. Being part of a solution. The no-fuss StreetSmart method. Is there an easier or better way of making a tangible difference? I cannot wait to see the change we will bring to Swellendam as a direct result of this programme," said Henk Klijn, owner of Augusta de Mist Country House and chairman of the StreetSmart Swellendam steering committee, at the launch event in Swellendam.

Well done to the 2012 Top 10 Restaurants!

We give these restaurants a standing ovation, as the managers and staff went all out to

ensure that their diners can donate generously to raise funds for street children projects.

StreetSmart is a team effort and collectively, as a result of all the StreetSmart resaturants' participation in 2012, StreetSmart could give R675,000 to programmes that will help vulnerable children in 2013.

See how the funds will help the children on a long-term basis.

Let’s take StreetSmart SA a notch up to help even more children!

Remember, every R5 counts!

StreetSmart: Don’t Drink and Make a Difference

In the spirit of ‘Don’t drink and make a difference’ participants at the 12th OMICRON South African User Conference as well as the 2012 Southern African Power System Protection Conference were encouraged to donate their evening function drinks vouchers towards Streetsmart. In total close to 600 drinks vouchers and a few small cash amounts were contributed. Hence R60,000 (R100 per drinks voucher) have been donated towards Streetsmart.

Streetsmart is a charitable organisation which facilitates family reunification, education and skills training programmes for street children. For more information, please visit  www.streetsmartsa.org.za  – also note the 2012 Christmas Raffle with 200 fabulous prices to  be won from 600 tickets.

The 12th OMICRON South African User Conference proved to be another highly successful event with 222 participants attending the two day event on 12 and 13 November 2012. Various papers on new technologies in protective relay and energy meter testing as well as primary testing topics such as line impedance measurements and transformer diagnosis were presented. Very positive feedback was received for the practical demonstration sessions conducted during the afternoons. The 13th OMICRON South African User Conference is scheduled for 11 and 12 November 2013.

StreetSmart SA, the organisation dedicated towards helping street children rebuild their lives by collecting R5 donations through participating restaurants in Cape Town and surrounding towns, has raised more than R5,6 million since its inception in 2005.

This year alone, the StreetSmart initiative funded four social workers, one family reconstruction worker, one panel beating instructor and two aftercare teachers directly benefiting over 1 108 children through various beneficiary organisations in the communities of participating restaurants.

In times when many people struggle to make ends meet I feel enormous pleasure, privilege and most of all gratitude that we as StreetSmart may continue to enjoy support not only from a widening base of participating restaurants but also an increasing number of individuals and companies who are adopting us as their favourite charity.

Through their generosity and input are we able to support the great work of our varied beneficiaries who are collectively doing outstanding work for those children who are the most vulnerable in our society,” said Nils Heckscher, Chairman of StreetSmart SA, at the 2012 handover ceremony in Cape Town.

A total of R675 000 raised this year, was distributed to beneficiaries working with children in need in Cape Town, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and the Helderberg. All the NGO’s are actively involved with social development and rehabilitation of street children with the ultimate goal of family unification.
