On?3 May 2007, her pilgrimage started in St Jean Pied de Port in France, crossed over the Pyrenees mountains into Spain. On route she passed through many small villages and also bigger towns, had to cross over mountain passes and over barren, desolate plains. Through sunshine and rain, heat and cold, this ancient pilgrim's route ends in the city of?Santiago de Compostela (St.James in the Field of the Star).??The city?was founded after the discovery of the remains of the Apostle Santiago in the 9th century. Santiago soon became a pilgrimage centre.? Over 100,000 pilgrims per year on foot, bicycle, donkey or horseback come from over a 100 countries to claim their certificate called a compostela, based on their pilgrim passport called a credential, filled with stamps from the towns they passed along the route.? The credential proves they have followed the route formally. The city's Baroque cathedral is the destination of the pilgrimage. St. James' remains are said to be beneath the altar in the crypt of the cathedral.
