It was a dining experience of Stenströms CEO, Anders Bengtsson, at a Cape Town restaurant that would change the fate of the Mother City’s destitute street children significantly. Patrons were invited via a card placed on each table, to donate R5 to StreetSmart SA in suppport of their efforts to rescue vulnerable children from a life on the streets.

Stenströms and StreetSmart SA have found common ground in helping to keep Cape Town’s youngsters off the streets, so much so that Stenströms recently handed over a further R25 OOO donation to StreetSmart SA at the Radisson Blu in Granger Bay. These funds will help to maintain the momentum of this life-changing project.

Stenströms was established in 1899 and produces fine quality men’s shirts and ladies’ blouses made from 100% twofold super cotton. This iconic Swedish fashion house has just celebrated its 115th anniversary by creating an exclusive anniversary collection capturing the very essence of the brand. For 115 years, the brand has delivered garments boasting on trend design and superb quality.

Stenströms’ corporate social responsibility footprint stretches as far afield as Estonia, where they established the country’s first centre for disabled children and their families in 2007, also supporting a home for disabled children.

StreetSmart SA is a registered non-profit and a public benefit organisation that distributes raised funds to selected beneficiaries. The current beneficiaries in South Africa areorganisations that work with street children and those who are vulnerable and at risk of becoming street children. StreetSmart SA raises money via participating restaurants, and distributes it directly to organisations who have the experience and facilities to help vulnerable children. Participating restaurants display a StreetSmart SA card on their tables, informing patrons that a voluntary R5 donation will be added to their bill, which they may increase at their discretion.

’It gives us great pleasure to support StreetSmart SA. Children living on the streets

are amongst the most marginalized of all South Africa’s children, and they need our

support,’ said Anders Bengtsson, owner and President of Stenströms.

‘StreetSmart's goal is to be part of the process of social normalisation and to encourage the public not to put money in the hands of children, as this keeps them on the streets. In essence, eating and donating at a StreetSmart restaurant is the responsible way to help a street child,’ said Nils Heckscher, chairman of StreetSmart SA.

StreetSmart SA has handed over R220 000 to their Franschhoek and Stellenbosch beneficiaries for 2015, The Kusasa Project and Home from Home.

The Kusasa Project offers educational opportunities to vulnerable children from the informal settlement outside Franschhoek. The funds raised by StreetSmart Franschhoek will go towards a social worker salary, as well as an auxiliary social worker salary.

Home from Home provides supported and supervised foster care for abandoned and vulnerable children in small family homes in their own communities. The money raised by StreetSmart will fund the partial salary of a social worker, transport, communication and family reunification services in support of the foster mothers in Kayamandi and Cloetesville.

“Home from Home is thrilled once again to be the recipient of funding from StreetSmart for our Stellenbosch based homes. The challenges faced working with children who have been living on the streets are complex. Thanks to StreetSmart’s support of Home from Home’s projects in the Winelands area, our social work team are able to work alongside the Foster Mothers and children to ensure they receive the appropriate support, guidance, counselling and care,” said Home from Home's development director, Pippa Shaper.
