He is passionate about all things South African. Zaid is a dynamic self-starter who leads-from-the-front, and has held Senior positions with some of the country's leading hospitality brands including Sun International, Taj Hotels, and The Royal Portfolio. Currently, Zaid serves as Director of a hospitality consultancy serving the Industry. He has extensive international hospitality experience having worked in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Africa. Zaid served on the board of FEDHASA and is nominated to the Chaine de Rotisseurs since 2007. Zaid joined StreetSmart as a director on 01 January 2019 and was appointed as Chairman in April 2021 after serving one term as Vice-chairman.
Melanie Burke (Vice-chairman)
holds an MBA in Information Technology (Bond University), Diplomas in Diversity Management (Wits), Project Management and Marketing (UNISA). Melanie has enjoyed a successful career in the financial services industry, with a special focus on strategic management and product innovation. She owns her company MAB and Associates (Pty) Ltd, consulting in the SMME and ICT sectors. Melanie is a founding member of StreetSmart SA.
holds a degree in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics. South African by birth, she moved to the UK in her teens not returning until 1997. After a successful career in Recruitment and Head hunting she returned to start the award winning restaurant Savoy Cabbage. She has worked as an AIDS councillor and became a trustee of The Friends of ATICC Trust. She has previously been actively involved with Amnesty International. Caroline joined StreetSmart as a director on 27 May 2015.
holds a BA Honours degree in English and Sociology from Stellenbosch University and a MBA from UCT. She has a distinguished track record in marketing and advertising.Su held the position of CEO of Wines of South Africa (WOSA) from 2000 until the end of 2013. In 2014 she started her own business, Thinking Seahorses, and launched the wine tourism website, www.tastetrip.co.za. Su joined StreetSmart as a director on 12th February 2015.
started his 36 year long hotelier career as a pageboy. Nils, a trained chef, worked in many positions in Berlin, Paris, London, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Cape and its people is where his passion lies. He is involved in various tourism structures. After running Winchester Mansions, a delightful Hotel in Sea Point, Nils started his own “sensible advisory service to hospitality businesses in Africa”, Not just Hotels. Nils is a founding member of StreetSmart SA.
is the host of the Weekend Breakfast Show on CapeTalk Radio Station. In this role, he has interviewed leading personalities, business leaders, politicians, thought leaders, community activists and religious leaders from both South Africa and abroad. His real joy is derived from engaging with fellow South Africans on matters that are important to them.
Africa studied accounting at the University of Cape Town and went on to do his articles at PwC. He then went on to teach a professional development course to first year students at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town.
Africa serves on the board of Cape Town Opera, Africa’s premier opera company and he is on the panel of judges for the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards. Africa joined StreetSmart as a director on 01 January 2019.
has a multicultural background being a South African with Ghanaian descent. Effie is passionate about giving back to society, which is evident from her time spent at the UCT Refugee Rights Unit while pursuing her LLB Degree at the University of Cape Town. She is a general practitioner as an admitted Attorney, Notary Public and Conveyancer at MAURICE PHILLIPS | WISENBERG. Effie joined StreetSmart as a director on 24 April 2018.
holds a BA Hon, Masters in Business Administration - Museum Management from the Michigan Ann Arbor University in the USA. In 2002 she founded the successful vehicle hire company, MLT Corp. Amongst others, Janet also has directorial experience in arts and culture management in provincial government and facilitated an international tour on artworks for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, during 1998. She is active on the speaking circuit handling topics such as Transport, Tourism, Culture and Heritage, Oil and Gas and Women's development mentorship. Janet joined StreetSmart as a director on 5 December 2016.
holds a Teaching Diploma from Rhodes University and a Grade 8 for Piano from both the Royal School of Music and UNISA, as well as diplomas in Public Relations and Marketing. Jenny entered a career in Tourism with Hospitality Sales and Marketing, and initially worked for various tourism service providers, elevating in responsibility to Director of Sales, before starting her own representation company, Jenny Greeff Marketing.
With experience in both the corporate sector and in representing four and five star luxury lodges and hotels across South Africa, Mozambique and more recently Kenya, Jenny is well connected in the industry. Jenny joined StreetSmart as a director on 01 January 2019.
is a qualified social worker and holds a post-graduate honours degree specializing in Social Policy and Management from UCT. Her first passion is child protection and she is a Protective Behaviours facilitator, a prevention programme that aims to empower children against abuse.
Marion formed the Western Cape Social Workers Forum- an online platform of information for professional practitioners in the field of social development. She is also an active member of Toastmasters International and is a qualified Distinguished Toastmaster. Marion joined StreetSmart as a director on 01 July 2016.
